With so much information about new kinds of naturopathic treatments, it can be confusing to understand the essentials. To better understand hyperbarics/HBOT, our naturopathic practitioners have compiled the answers to the most straightforward questions.
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the medical use of oxygen in a pressurized environment, at a level higher than 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA).
What is a hyperbaric chamber?
A hyperbaric chamber is an enclosed space that allows you to breathe 26%- 100% oxygen in a pressurized environment, to deliver more oxygen into your bloodstream. There is only 21% oxygen in the air you breathe normally.
Being in the pressurized HBOT chamber is like being at a lower altitude where the body begins to absorb a healing dose of oxygen which is infused into every cell of the body. This increased oxygen exposure is critical for the improved healing response of our cells and nervous system.
Why is HBOT effective?
When experiencing increased air pressure, oxygen can better dissolve and saturate the blood plasma. which yields a broad variety of positive physiological, biochemical and cellular effects. This noninvasive therapy is the most trusted way to increase oxygen levels to all organs of the body.
What has HBOT been traditionally used for?
There are 13 FDA approved indications for HBOT but over 100 off-label uses that have a tremendous amount of research backing their efficacy. Some conditions include:
Diabetic foot wounds
Air and gas embolism
Carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation
Gas gangrene
Decompression sickness (The Bends)
Acute mountain sickness.
However, as this naturopathic practice has become more widely popularized and utilized in naturopathic medicine, research shows that HBOT can help treat even more conditions.
What does HBOT help improve?
Lyme’s Disease: Tick-borne bacteria can lay dormant for years, and oxygen is essential for killing bacteria and breaking up protective biofilms. HBOT has also been shown to increase free radicals to combat Lyme bacteria. (Source)
Fertility: Latest studies highlight the potential of HBOT to improve fertility, as a frequent cause of infertility may be a problem of micro-circulation at the uterine level. HBOT can help enhance arterial and venous blood flow and improve the thickness and stimulation of the endometrium lining the uterus. (Source)
Athletic Performance: HBOT helps athletes at all skill levels heal quickly so they can get back to playing their favorite sport. Common athletic injuries include strains and sprains, which naturally result in compressed blood vessels that restrict the flow of oxygen carrying plasma and red blood cells. HBOT can prevent further damage to cells and tissue by saturating blood plasma and hemoglobin with oxygen. (Source)
HBOT Can Decrease… | HBOT Can Improve… |
Neuroinflammation | Better Concentration |
Chronic Fatigue | Better Sleep Schedules |
Chronic Headaches | Better Energy Levels |
Inflammation Related Arthritic Pain | Better Mobilized Blood Flow |
Depression | Better Antibiotic Intervention |
Insomnia | Faster Healing Time |
Muscle Discomfort | Overall Mood |
How long should I do HBOT?
The typical treatment lasts for 60-90 minutes.
Is HBOT uncomfortable?
Not at all! You will lay down in the chamber and breathe normally.
How long does it take to see results?
The best results of HBOT are seen after a minimum of 10 sessions.
Is HBOT safe for children?
Because HBOT is a noninvasive procedure, children can safely participate and receive the same benefits as adults. However, a child must be able to sit or lay calmly in the chamber for the duration of the process.
